Page 2    THE PHIL
EVANS COLLECTION
A Little Music? Okeh!
Phil Evans would never accept a story without
proof or some sort of confirmation, no matter
how good it sounded. In the 1950's he brought
the surviving members of the Jean Goldkette
Orchestra back in touch with each other. The
boys worked hard recalling every possible
detail they could about the best time of their
lives with a band they all loved. They wanted
their story told by someone they could trust.
Back in 1927, every member of the  Goldkette
Band felt they had the best band in the
country. Thirty years later, that feeling was
the same. Recalling those Goldkette years
became something they all enjoyed very much.

Every person who really knew Bix, was very happy to
finally have someone that they trusted and liked as well.
In the 1960's Phil's book was starting to take shape. He
would send those had helped him, the entire chapter
where they were mentioned for their approval. He would
tell them they could add or subtract anything that they
like. He would tell them, "It's YOUR story, not mine".
When the mess happened with the 1974 book Bix, "Man &
Legend", Phil's biggest fear was that those had helped
him over the years would think that it was he who had
changed many of the stories about Bix. Worse yet, there
were other stories that were included which had no basis
in fact at all. What was done to the memory of Bix's
family, mostly his father, should be a source of shame to
the person responsible. Not a word was true. However
it's now considered a major issue in Bix's life, and used
as the primary reason behind Bix's drinking and downfall.
This is so firmly planted in the minds of those who follow
Bix that any attempt to explain that this never happened,
is met with hostility! The Beiderbecke family were proud
beyond words of their youngest son. Davenport was his
home and he was always welcome, no matter what was
going on in his life at the time. Some people can't grasp
the true meaning of "unconditional love". Nor was Bix ever
"banished" from Davenport! Isn't the truth enough? Is
the money that you hope to make from
destroying his family's reputation worth it? Shame.
