Early Photo of Paul Whiteman during his "Pre-Jazz" years.
Bix sure looks happy to be in thePaul Whiteman Orchestra.
Tram doesn't look too upset aboutthe situation either!
Paul Whiteman. A great guy whohas been taken apart over theyears by "jazz critics" who just don't get it. And they never will.
DID YOU KNOW? That for the 1981 documentary on Bix, Phil let the producers borrow 84 original photographs. Exactly one half of them were returned to him. They rest went to an ex-associate who later donated them to a well known university jazz archive, for a huge tax write-off. Phil found this out in 1997 while working on his last book on Bix. This is just one of the many times that this happened to Phil Evans, as well as anybody else who's had a rare Bix item.
Sorry Pal! This "Bench In The Park" has been taken. Now, SCRAM! Right girls?
The Casino at Hudson Lake around 1913.Notice the trees!
Hudson Lake. The Summer of 1926 was remembered by all as the best summer of their lives. Bix and the boys had this place jumping every night. According to his friends, it was here that Bix really hit his stride on the cornet.
AND YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!! Tell David I sent ya, and say HI for me!
The legendary cabin, home of Bix & Pee Wee Russell in 1926 at Hudson Lake. It had a piano. Photo is from 1964.
JESSE CRAWFORD - Jesse once mentioned that Bix recorded a side with him, and that he paid Bix $50 for the session. He wasn't trying to impress anyone by saying this, it was a very casual comment. The song was "I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling" recorded in New York in 1929. The dates match up with Bix in NY. There was an Old Gold broadcast that evening. The Victor card says 2 Trumpets & 1 Cornet, with no names. The solo at first really doesn't sound much like Bix. More of a Busse-type solo. But there's a couple of spots, bending of notes, and a phrase at the end of the first eight bars, the choice of notes sound like pure Bix. Being with Paul, and recording for Columbia would be a good reason for Bix not to try to sound like himself. His mother was a big Crawford fan. Is it? Can't say for sure, but here's the solo. And form your own opinion, it's just as valid as one coming from someone who calls himself an expert.

This is it, I've had it. My girl ran off with some banjo player from Akron. I can get over her, no problem. But she took my Kazoo Lips CD's with her. I'm ruined. I'll finish these two bottles here. There's a river behind me. When I get there, I'll either jump in it or pee in it.
