DID YOU KNOW? That Bix was in the Gennett Studio when Jelly Roll Morton made those famous sides with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings? He went there with his pal, Don Murray. And for weeks afterwards all that Bix and Don could talk about was the greatness of Jelly Roll Morton! Which would be something that the three of them had in common!

BUT.. he did clean up rather well! I wonder if he was aware of the caterpillar that had crawled up on his upper lip?

To have been Hoagy Carmichael in the Mid 1920's, must have been a wonderful thing.

DID YOU KNOW? Charles Margulis the "Great Gabbo" himself, was one of Bix's biggest fans? He had worked for various Goldkette outfits himself before joining Whiteman. He hung around the Victor Orchestra as often as he could, so he could hear and hang out with Bix. Gabbo was present when many of those great Goldkette stories took place! He was also one of the people who did NOT want to talk about Bix. He was disgusted with everything that had been written about Bix before Phil contacted him. He was yet another who said that he had never seen anything in print that came close to describing his friend as he knew him. Margulis was considered one of the finest lead trumpet men of his time. When listening to his voice while he's recalling Bix, it's plain to hear how much he loved the guy as a person, and admired the man as a musician. He also mentions that in his opinion, Bix was the greatest creator of jazz music - ever! He placed Bix even over Louis Armstrong. And he loved Louis as much as any other horn player does. Gabbo & Pops were good friends as well.

Here's Bing Crosby and his violin. He was so good that when he decided that he'd rather sing, the only person who could fill his shoes was Joe Venuti! Not really true, of course, I have to put this disclaimer in because someone will end up quoting me and say I'm trying to pass this off as fact. And that's just sad...

This is Bix - Happy, Content & exactly where he wanted to be, in Paul Whiteman's Orchestra. And when he wasn't with this orchestra, he couldn't wait to get back.

A Couple of hot kids enjoying their fame. Harry Barris & Skin Young. I think there was another guy with them, I Believe he ended up selling orange juice. A couple of years later, Skin had a bit of trouble when Cliff Edwards came home early one day and caught Skin in the act with his wife.

Here's a nice "on location" photo of the Jean Goldkette Orchestra. It's Pre-Bix, but still a nice photograph!
