Expensive......!
DID YOU KNOW? - At least a couple of
times the Goldkette Orchestra ended up
stranded on the road. The money from the home
office didn't arrive on time, for whatever
reason. Both times took place in May of 1927.
In Ithaca, New York, the band was saved by
Spiegle Willcox's father, who gave the band a
loan to get them back on the road. The other
time was when the band played at the Cloister
Club at Princeton. This time they were saved by
Fletcher Henderson! "Smack" and his boys were
also at Princeton that weekend playing for one of
the traditional Princeton "House Parties" that are
held every May. Bix visited his pals during every
break. Fletcher saved the day with a loan. A
truly wonderful guy.
