KL-2 PAUL WHITEMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA FILM SOUNDTRACKS 1930 & 1932
|
KING OF JAZZ - 1930 FRENCH VERSION
|
For the Paul Whiteman fans who own or at least have seen the first Major Music Motion Picture recorded in Sound. Well, here it is in French. Bing Crosby and the Rhythm Boys, Venuti & Lang, Tram, Goldie, Gabbo, Wilbur Hall, and the rest at their best. The only thing missing was Bix. He mentioned to a friend in Davenport that he plays on one selection that was used in the film. Which one? Who can say . . . Recorded from very old acetates, some better than others, but most cleaned up pretty well.

CLIFF FRIEND AND THE STARS OF THE PAUL WHITEMAN ORCHESTRA - 1932
|
This all but unknown film features the great songwriter CLIFF FRIEND.
The film starts with Cliff and his mother getting ready to move from the
old homestead into a new house. Cliff seems to be doing quite well. The
movers are bringing out boxes to put into the truck, one of them has a
huge box with Cliff's old songs. Cliff tells the movers to dump them, it's
just junk. Ma Friend almost has a canary over this, and says they must
make the trip too. So, Cliff & Ma start looking at the old sheet music,
and as one would expect in a situation like this, the covers come to life.
Which alone, should be reason enough to leave them behind. Within the
next five minutes or so, a dozen of Cliff's big hits are performed. There's
a lovely version of JUNE NIGHT, sung on screen by Jack Fulton. The
Pickens Sisters & Peggy Healy are also seen on screen. And in the
background, off-screen unfortunately but well heard is BUNNY BERIGAN!
Bunny had just joined the Whiteman Orchestra when this was filmed.
Beautiful sound direct from the print.
